Our renewable energy business is built on the know-how and capabilities acquired over several decades in our wheat processing plants, where efficient energy production and use are both a core competence and pre-condition for a sound and viable business.
When in the early ‘90s the Italian Government started promoting stand-alone renewable energy production, we drew from our industrial experience to step into renewable energy production, first with a biomass cogeneration plant in Italy and then with hydro, solar photovoltaic and biogas plants. At present we own and operate 15 renewable energy plants in 3 Countries: Italy (6), Albania (4) and Romania (5). Our total installed capacity is 57 MW with a corresponding average yearly production in excess of 200.000 MWh.
Renewable energy production is a key element of our sustainable and environmental-responsible industrial approach. We help to reduce greenhouse gas effects by avoiding emissions of 130.000 tons of CO2 every year. Thanks to renewable energy production, Etea Group achieves an overall positive carbon footprint, as the CO2 emission savings derived from our renewable energy production are higher than CO2 emissions generated by the use of conventional fuels in our processing plants.

Water a precious natural resource, fundamental for human life, is an important source for renewable energy generation. On a global level, water is used for 73% of renewable electric energy production, about 16% of the total electric energy production (1).
Water is the primary source for Etea’s renewable energy production. In the mini-hydro sector we have designed, built and manage (in some cases with local partners) 10 run-of-the-river hydro-electric plants, generating a total installed power equivalent to 46 MW and an average annual corresponding production of 150,000 MWh.
These facilities are located in Italy (1 plant with installed capacity of 3 MW), Albania (4 plant with installed capacity of 30 MW) and Romania (5 plant with installed capacity of 13 MW).

The use of biomass in the production of renewable energy is one of Etea’s defining characteristics. Over the years our Group has developed and industrialized its own technology for the combustion of rice hulls, a by-product of the rice milling process which is widely available in Northern Italy.
Biomass combustion has a neutral effect on carbon dioxide emissions. The CO2 emitted during combustion is equal to that absorbed by the plants’ for growth and that would have been released back into the atmosphere through the decomposition of the organic material at the end of plants’ life cycle. For that reason, the combustion of biomass does not have a negative impact with regards to the carbon dioxide balance.
Our company Idroblins is a 50/50 joint venture between the Etea Group and a large Italian rice producer. In 2000 the Etea Group designed and built co-generation plant producing electrical energy and technological steam from rice hulls. The plant, located in Crova (Vercelli, Italy), was refurbished in 2010 and has an installed capacity of 8 MW, equal to an annual production of 55.000 MWH.
The innovative use of rice hulls as biomass in the Corva plant has resolved significant environmental problems linked to the methods previously used for rice hull disposal. Finally, the resulting ash by-product is used as a thermal insulator in the steel industry, maximizing the re-use potential of this natural resource.
Solar energy, obtained from the sun’s radiation, is the primary source of free and unlimited energy on Earth.
The sun’s power is the most sustainable form of potential energy available. Harnessing this energy reduces dependency on fossil fuels and helps to protect the environment for future generations. For these reasons solar is one of the most desirable sources of renewable energy. Photovoltaic installations allow for the conversion of sunlight to electric energy and represent a superior means to producing clean, environmentally-friendly, renewable energy.
In line with the Italian government’s policies supporting the photovoltaic installations, the Etea Group has designed and manages 3 solar installations with an installed capacity around 3 MW.
Etea designed and built a small co-generation plant for the combined production of electric energy and heat from biogas. The plant is built around an internal combustion motor and as its energy source uses biogas obtained during the anaerobic digestion phase of waste streams originated from a nearby starch plant.
The biogas project is testimony to Etea’s willingness to creatively realize solutions that recover and reuse resources. Etea’s innovative and unique processes result in increased efficiency and reduced environmental impact in industrial processing.
Biogas is a reliable renewable energy source that can contribute to reducing greenhouse-gas emissions and increasing the environmental sustainability of processing activities. By finding innovative ways to reuse and valorize industrial liquid waste we are working towards reducing the negative impacts of industrial processing on the environment.

We design and build plants and oversee commissioning until the established energy saving objectives are met.
In Italy, Etea Energia has ESCO accreditation and operates in the electronic platforms of the electric market as well as in renewable energy certificate trade.
